Pirate

Rating: ★★★★

Our first pirate was this dashing figure, who made repeated attempts to steal breakfast and was frequently found hiding in our cereal boxes, much to A.’s great delight and amusement.

His clothes are sumptuous. His sleeveless jacket is cyan with orange and gold trim and gold buttons. In a classy touch, there are buttons moulded into the back representing a waistline adjustor. A thin-wristed klicky, his shirt is flared at the cuffs. He has a flourishing cravat tumbling down his shirt – a fashion accessory that appeared in the seventeenth century. At his belt is a gold chain with anchor pendant. His boots have gold tassels.

The hat (p/n 30090622) appears to be a tricorn with a cleft in the front, the navy shade of blue contrasting nicely with the cyan coat and scarlet trousers. Cocked hats like this were a development of the broad-rimmed and feathered style we associate with cavaliers, the sides being pinned up to stop them catching the wind and rigging.

The pirate has some accessories: a compass (p/n 30677573), gold baldrick (p/n 30218990) and a dark grey backsword (p/n 30295630).

The compass face is not the lenticular model.

The baldrick is the wide version and fits snugly around his jacket.

The length of the coat makes sitting down on chairs tricky. It gives him a tilt on a bench or when rowing a boat. The vent at the back allows him to ride a horse.

The sword is arguably atypical of early modern pirates who would have preferred a shorter weapon such as the cutlass for the hand-to-hand fighting that took place around a ship’s rigging.

The weakest part of this klicky is his hair, which is the classic male cut that was given an update in 2010. As such it’s significantly neater than most of the other pirates, who presumably lacked on-board hairdressers, and therefore sport buns and ponytails. The beard covers the mouth, where some others leave a space, so you can’t see his little smile. Any grooming deficiencies are redeemed, however, by his having a distinctive shade of dark brown hair, which is certainly unique among our klickies.
